The EKG Page
Normal sinus rhythm - EKG of the heart
Summary of events of the cardiac cycle
• P wave = spread of excitation wave over the atria just before contraction
• QRS wave = spread of excitation wave over the ventricles as the ventricles contract
• T wave = electrical recovery and relaxation of ventricles.
• A heart attack known as myocardial infarction (MI)
can be recognized by an elevation in the S-T segment of the ECG.

Normal Sinus Rhythm
Normal Sinus Rhythm - EKG
Arrhythmias you should know
V Tach -ventricles are not filling adequately from the atria w/ blood so the heart can
not pump normally - results in loss
of blood pressure can lead to a loss of consciousness and to heart failure
not pump normally - results in loss
of blood pressure can lead to a loss of consciousness and to heart failure
V fib – the heart quivers (fibrillates) and is unable to contract effectively – most common cause of sudden death.
Asystole - known as flatline, no cardiac electrical activity, hence no contractions no cardiac output or blood flow. Asystole is one of the conditions to certify clinical or legal death.
Assignment 1:
In the text please read Radiologic Sciences and Patient Care. 5th Edition,
Arlene Adler & Richard Carlton, 2012 Elsevier pp. 194-198
In a document please submit the following:
1. Briefly explain the normal EKG cardiac cycle (i.e. p-wave, QRS complex, t-wave) and the
tracing that occurs on an EKG strip as the heart beats normally.
2. What happens to the normal sinus rhythm when the following abnormal rhythms occur:
a. V-Tach
b. V-FIb
c. asystole
Assignment 1: Please submit EKG cardiac cycle diagram and analysis explanation on Moodle or in the website space provided.
